Take those damnable monuments to imbecility, racism, arrogance and ignorance down.
I see the Confederate monuments as a slap in the face to the people who were enslaved and then kept under the thumb of their former masters from 1871 to 1970…give or take. I can completely see why a Black American would look at those statues and feel the oppressive stare of the South and the KKK gazing upon them.
The South has not been good to our Black American brothers and sisters.
Those statues should not be on PUBLIC land and no PUBLIC funds should go towards their maintenance.
If we could divorce the South from her racially oppressive past, I’d be all for keeping those Statues up. However, it is not possible. Especially at a time when the drug war started by Nixon to take out his enemies whom Nixon characterized as “damned Niggers, Spics and Hippies” is still legislatively criminalizing millions of Black and poor White Americans each year and when American Law Enforcement are killing Americans, to include but not limited to Black Americans, with qualified immunity (aka qualified impunity) to the tune of 1,000 American Citizens each year. Mostly, this idiot war on drugs is waged to keep Americans from partaking of a substance which grows in the wild in my home state AND the Feds come around every so often to burn it out…coz it’s demon weed.
Jeff Sessions is proof positive that the attitudes of many in the South have not changed since that idiot Nixon’s Southern Strategy was used to win the Presidency.
I say all of that to say this. The injuries of the War between the States are still fresh over 150 years later.
Each new injury by the State opens the wounds anew.
No person who waged war against the State is owed a statue or honor in that State. State in this instance, of course, being the State which was created or, rather, cemented with Lincoln’s Northern War of Aggression.
If the South had won, they could have all of the Statues on public lands that they wished to erect to idiots such as Jeff Davis and Braxton Bragg.
They get no statues.
Again, those statues were erected for one purpose. The same purpose as the sudden eruption of the Confederate Battle Flag in the 1960s. Intimidation of Black Americans.
Either we have moved past that stupidity and we take them down or we admit that we are still petty pieces of shit who can’t get past the color of a person’s skin to get to know the human who exists within that skin.
Every Black American with an ounce of self respect is angered by those statues. I don’t expect a fellow cracker to fully comprehend it. I can’t. I only know that if I had to look at a statue of some guy who thought it right and proper to enslave me all of the time, I’d be pissed. If I was taxed to maintain that statue, I might be pissed enough to commit to an act of terror and blow that fucker up. If I had to look at a flag that symbolized every act of oppression against me and part of my taxes went to maintain that flag, I’d throw gasoline on that flag and burn that fucker down.
Any person with an ounce of dignity, self respect and honor would be angered by a State which insisted on maintaining statues and flags which were erected as a slight against their person would feel the same way.
Only a slave would feel otherwise.
