From my experience, one can take anyone from before the Politically Correct era of 2000 Forward and call them a bigot based on their writings. It doesn’t matter who we’re discussing. Even today, one can find bigotry in nearly anyone’s writings. If you one wishes to dismiss the ideas or writing of any person because of that one aspect, one would wind up dismissing nearly the whole of humanity. From W.E.B. Dubois to George Washington to Ronald Reagan to Bill Clinton, every last person who has put thought to paper has written something that is or could be construed as racist and will be construed as racist or bigoted by future generations. This is especially so with the current hyper-sensitive generation of Liberal.
If one wishes to seriously discuss a person or a social issue, one must take the whole of a person and the whole of the body of writing or work into consideration. Short slices or quotes from persons are excellent for memes and deconstruction of selected persons. However, this never gives a true and satisfying window into the soul of the person whom one is attempting to understand.
If character assassination is the goal, memes and selected quotes/slices without context are excellent weapons. Yet, they only serve to distort and distract.
Hillary can be made to look the fool if we take selected comments and opinions. Even Einstein can be made to look the dithering fool using his words detached from context against him.
Noam Chomsky is an especially dissected author and thought leader. If one takes only Chomsky as critic of Israel, one can make the man out to be a supporter of Islamic Tyranny. If one takes only his views of Vietnam or Cambodia into consideration, one could make Chomsky out to be a supporter of genocide and communist tyranny. Yet, if one reads the whole of his works and uses an overview thereof, one can see that Chomsky is a great critic of Imperialism as a whole. His views are as valid if not more so than many others of his generations and this one.
To know and understand a person from history, one must know the whole of the life not selected pieces of that life which are pulled out selectively with an agenda.
Jefferson can seem a genius or a racist crackpot depending on the level of knowledge of the man. Ceaser can seem the despot or the liberator. There is not a human being who has tread across the globe who cannot be made to seem monster or hero depending upon which work or word one chooses to use in support of one’s views.
