Gather up a group of Nomads from the North of Afghanistan. Throw in a decapitated dead goat and 40 or 50 highly prized horses. You’ve got Buzkashi. Literally, “dead goat.”

The goal of the game is for the rider to grab the goat, carry it from one pole to the other and then throw it in the circle at the center of the field.

I was given this video by an Afghani friend who lived in Mazr-e Sherif for a number of years. He’s lived and worked all over the north of Afghanistan with coalition forces. He’s attended the game several times and says it is an exciting spectacle. He confirmed the stories that I have heard about the riders being injured, maimed and killed during competition.
