My Adolph Rupp Collection

I’ve got a signature from every Coach except for Calipari.  I’ve tried to get a Cal signature several times but something unfortunate has always prevented me from obtaining it.  I don’t want to purchase it.   Rupp is the only one that I have purchased thus far as he was long dead by the time I was cognizant of Kentucky Basketball.

Civil War Re-enactment Uniforms for Sale

I am posting these items on my blog as I wish to sell them.  I did some re-enacting back in the ’90s but now live overseas.  There’s no place to use these items in Southeast Asia.  Basically, these things simply take up room in storage.  I’d like to sell them for a fair price.  If interested, pls contact me via this blog or at dave.kalin.srass@gmail.com.

I have five boxes full of these items.  Most of the items are in fair to new/used conditions.  A few items are unserviceable but easily repairable.

I want to sell all of the Civil War items in one group.  If you are interest please contact by email.
Thanks, Dave

The Death of the American Dream?

Image

They say that we’ve killed the American dream.

I don’t know about all of that. What is the American dream? Is it a luxurious life of fabulous wealth? Is the American dream simply to own a home?

Neither of those are my dream and I am an American. Is mine an unAmerican dream?

Many of my dreams have been fulfilled. I wanted to love an amazing woman. I wanted to be in the world and experience it’s people and cultures, to travel widely across the globe. I’ve not seen everything or visited every place that I would choose to see but life allots us only so much time. I wanted good friends.

I wanted to have enjoyable, carefree moments and to live along the edge of life where death and danger cross paths with life and beauty.

I’ve done all of these things.

So what is the American dream? Is it merely the possession of a house and enough money to comfortably die therein.  That is not my dream.

My dream is to live until I die.  I have done this and will continue to do so.

What is your American Dream?

Obama, Sanctions and a World Drowning in it’s own Blood

Image

Obama is big on economic sanctions. Sanctions only work when the leadership of a nation cares about the welfare of their people. If the leadership of a nation cared about their people, sanctions would not be necessary in the first place.

Think about it.

When have sanctions truly worked. Didn’t work in Iraq. Didn’t work for Britain against the American Colonies. Didn’t work for the American colonists against Britain. Didn’t work for the South against Britain in the American Civil War. Didn’t work in the Balkans. Neither did they work with World War 1 or 2 Germany. Nor the Soviet Union during the Cold War. They aren’t working now with Syria or Iran.

Air wars do not work either. Even in the Balkans which was primarily an air war, we had to occupy with ground forces.

The initial Air War in Afghanistan was a failure which led to massive troop deployments.

Violence works. But usually it is only a short term fix. Every war has led to other wars. Most of the wars occurring now find their seeds of discontent in the outcomes of the Second World War.

War is a tool. The problem is that we never follow through. We tire of our wars. We run out of patience, will, resources. Therefore, we leave every war half finished.

That leads directly to wars of the future.

When the United States pulls back with Obama’s leadership, it will leave a power vacuum. Geo-political power vacuums are never filled peacefully.

Men decide the outcomes of most struggles violently.

This bothers me not in the least. Let them kill each other. The earth is overcrowded as it is. America, I think, grows weary of holding back the teeming masses of brutish thugs. Set them loose.

But keep our military strong enough to keep them at bay should they decide to try American resolve at our borders.

Obama Wins! Drink the Kool Aid America.

Drink the Kool Aid

Drink the Kool Aid

America! You’ve been had. You had a choice between Jim Jones and Jim Bakker. You chose between a guy who wants you to drink the Kool Aid and blindly follow him to the abyss and a guy who wanted to bilk you out of your money and to follow blindly like a sheep off the cliff.

You chose to drink the Kool Aid. Don’t whine later. Just drink the Kool Aid and pass away into the great darkness.

You

deserve your fate whatever it may be.

I’m standing by to pick up some pieces.

The poor will still be poor but a little more dependent. The Rich are still going to get richer. Though, they’ll hide it better as you take little notice having drank deeply of the cool waters offered by your Cult Leader.

Four more years of the World losing respect and our enemies being emboldened.

As the Middle East burns, America desires cupcakes and free government cheese and crackers.

This guarantees a future war which isn’t all that bad. The war[s] will kill off some of the excess population that is dragging the planet and the people down.

Look for more violence in the coming years while Obama stands by and apologizes for America’s culpability in the genesis of said violence.

Mitch is a Fool if he doesn’t hire Petrino

There’s nothing else to consider.  No one else to consider.  Someone is going to hire Petrino.

Throw the money at him.  Get Petrino in Kentucky Blue.

Petrino will have Kentucky in a Bowl Game NEXT YEAR!

There is not one other coach who will be able to accomplish that feat.

But Mitch will balk based on the past.  I don’t care what Petrino did in his past.  At most Petrino stays at UK for 3 or 4 years.  When he leaves, the program will be headed in the right direction.

Oh and it won’t take another hefty buy out to pay the next incompetent to leave peaceably.

The key after Petrino will be to find a coach who is similarly a disciplinarian and as great of a game prep coach.

Find that and you have continuity and a program that will continue to rise.

Learn from the past Mitch.  Otherwise, hire a Cutcliffe and be prepared to leave with him in 3 or 4 years.

Joker will not Return

After much conversation, evaluation and prayer, I have determined that it is in the best interest of our athletics program to make a change in our football coaching staff at the conclusion of the season. I do so with a heavy heart for a man who has served his alma mater for almost 22 years as a player and a coach. Joker Phillips has carried the banner for the Blue and White with honor and pride. I have enjoyed working alongside him and am thankful for his friendship for the last decade. His concern for the entire program, his work and teaching of young people, his humanitarian work, and the friendship we all enjoy with him will long surpass the scoreboard. I want to thank him for all of those things on behalf of Kentucky.

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately and will be managed internally. I understand the challenge and significance of finding a new leader for our football program. It will be done with great concern for our student-athletes, students of the University of Kentucky, the Big Blue Nation and the citizens of the Commonwealth. Kentucky Football needs to be and will be a championship contender in the SEC.

Hopefully, Mitch Barnhart is serious about that last line and the Board of Trustees and the UKAA are on board as well.

UK has given much lip service to the idea of a real football program at UK.  They’ve never lived up to the talk, though.  If UK is to be serious about football, it must be committed to massive change.  A whole new approach is needed and perhaps a whole new Board of Trustees will be necessary.

The entire culture must change for UK to become a championship contender in the SEC and the BCS.

Is it time for Mitch Barnhart to go as well?

First the “microwave” comment and now the “real fans/personal agenda” comment.  Mitch is becoming a hard man to support.

Mitch, here’s a novel idea.  Kentucky Football fans may not be satisfied with losing and being the carpet over which the rest of the SEC (now including Vanderbilt) stomps.

Joker Phillips is not earning his keep.  He is now 1-9 on the year.  He’s lost the fan base because he is losing games.  No one gives a damn about his color.  If he were winning, everyone would be behind him.  He’s not winning.  He’s being paid to win ball games.

He’s a terrible coach who hasn’t had a prepared team in his three years as coach.

He should be employed based upon his talent, skills and record as an SEC Coach.  His employment should not be guaranteed based upon cronyism (i.e., his friendship with the AD).

This isn’t the first bout of poor judgment on the part of Barnhart.  He kept Tubby far too long after letting Tubby pimp a larger and wholly undeserved pay raise.  He let Tubby squeeze a loyalty bonus out of UK even as Tubby planned his move to Minnesota.  Barnhart hired Gillispie and nearly killed Kentucky Basketball.  He missed the opportunity to hire Mike Leach.  He was against hiring Calipari and has caused turmoil with his attempts to exert control over the basketball program risking a rift that might have caused Calipari to depart the program.

It’s past time to let Joker go.  Do your damn job, Mitch Barnhart.

Mitch Barnhart; “Tis but a flesh wound!”

Mitch Barnhart on Kentucky Football”

“Football is not where we want it to be just yet and we’ve got to work on that. We made some progress and climbed up the hill a little bit and we’re doing some good things in a really tough league but we’ve found that we’ve stubbed our toes a little bit. We’ve got to figure that out and we’ll get that figured out.”

dey s'posed to be SEC!!!

dey s’posed to be SEC!!!

Mitch, you stupid bastard!   Jokers got no arms left!

What the hell is this guy smoking?

All Men Are NOT Created Equal

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I don’t think that humans are divine or that life is sacred. We, humanity, certainly do not act as if life is sacred. History shows that life is held cheap. Hence, Wars and slavery, conquest, religious and political persecution, genocide, rape and pillage.

Men and women are as important as the value which we assign to them or the value that a person achieves through their deeds.

We are not equal. We each have talents more or less than others. We are what we set upon our path to be. Nothing more and nothing less. Some wish to be nothing. Others wish to be more than that and more than what they might have been had they not taken it upon themselves to strive to be.

A couch potato, trailer park dwelling bigot has little or no value in the grand scheme of things. Yet, a man such as Einstein or Subotai, Salah al Din or Stephen Hawking leaves a great mark upon humanity. They proved themselves of more value to humanity.

Equality is nonsense. Tolerance is even more idiotic.

I can accept differences in humanity. I will not tolerate those that serve me ill. And why should I? In the name of tolerance and some ill devised sense of equality.

I’m not saying that we should run around murdering people who are different or those with different ideals. Conversely, I don’t think we should tolerate ignorance such as Islamic sharia simply because we wish to be egalitarian. This facade of equality is nonsense. All men are not created equal. If such was the case, we would all be equal. There would be no paupers. There would be no Kings. We would all be clones.

To be certain, some start off with cultural or economic or some other type of advantage that places them above others at the start. Then again, there are examples such as the aforementioned Subotai who came from nothing and became the, arguably, greatest General in the history of humankind.

And none of this is based upon superficial traits such as race, religion, skin color, hair color, length of limbs or forehead size.

The Girl in the Cafe

Ray and I were sitting in the City Center Cafe when an attractive young woman sat down at the table next to us.  This was usually a sign that she was interested in talking to us.  It happened a few times before that women would sit near us and wait for an invitation to join our table.  The problem with this was that it nearly always caused an uproar.  Afghan men did not like “their women” talking to “the damn Americans.”
We were careful.  Ray and I furtively searched the cafe for intrusive or fundamentalist looking characters.  Long hair and full beards were usually sure signs of a fundy freak but sometimes the young guys would stare at us.  It seemed sometimes that they were waiting for some pretense to raise a scene.  Seeing no one especially alarming, Ray invited the young girl over to our table.  I didn’t really pay her too much attention.  She and Ray spoke for a while until she rose and bid us good day.  As she departed, she sat a piece of paper in front of Ray, smiled and walked off.

“Another phone number?”
“Yeap!”
“Ray, that’s going to get you killed.”
“I know.  But it’ll be worth it.”

A few days later, the young girl met us at the roof top cafe of our hotel.  Amazingly, she was unescorted.  We drank tea as she related her story to us.
“My Mother and Father are selling me to an old man.  I do not want to go.  I’m educated.  I graduated last year from one of the best schools in Switzerland.  Now, I’m going to be sold to this old man because my parents need money.”
“Well, run away.  Leave.  Can’t you find a way to get back to Switzerland?” Ray asked.
I just stared on incredulously.  It’s not that I’d not heard this story before or that I was surprised but it’s not something to which one grows accustomed.  Parents sell their daughters all the time in Afghanistan.  Still, the injustice of this girls plight angered me.
“To run would bring dishonor to my family.  Besides there is nowhere that I could hide and running would be dangerous.  I’d either be thrown in a dirty prison or killed.”  She answered Ray.
I sipped my tea.
She continued; “I was raised to be obedient.  Still, I never thought that I’d be sold like this to an old man.  I allowed myself to believe that I could have a normal life like my friends in Switzerland.”
Ray stared at her.  He looked upset.
“Do not worry Ray.  There is nothing that you could do.  If you involved yourself, it would be trouble.  Dangerous for you.”
I had heard similar stories while in Afghanistan.  However, I’d never met the story in flesh and blood.  This girl was beautiful.  Even wrapped up in her hijab (scarf) and dressed in the drab black so common to Afghan women, she was stunning.  She was cultured, educated, sophisticated.  None of that mattered.
“Ray, this man is a fundamentalist.  I will spend the rest of my life in a closet.  I will be expected to give him boys.  Once I have a baby, I will be hidden away in the dark for the rest of my life to protect his honor.  No one will see me.  I will have no friends.  I will be comfortable but useless.  This is not life.
I contemplated killing myself but I do not have the strength of those girls.  I can only pray that this old man dies before he can consummate the bargain that my parents have made.”
This is one of the more maddening aspects of Afghanistan.  American politicians such as Laura Bush are constantly yammering away at the improvement in the lives of Afghan women.  I’ve not seen it.  There was an improvement in the lives of women in the three to six months immediately following the “liberation” of Afghanistan.  However, the moment that Sharia was enshrined in the Afghan Constitution the curtain fell on women’s rights in the land of the Pushtoon and Tajiks.  Women’s rights are now a pipe dream in Afghanistan.
