Family Reunion in Kabul!

In Afghanistan, family, Holidays, Humor, Religion, thinking out loud, Unny on December 12, 2009 at 11:33 am

Spent last night on the New Kabul Compound.  Yep!  After 5 years, it’s finally open.  Not finished yet, but, it’s open.

I arrived last night about 5 PM and called Jonathan to meet me.  Wound up walking around the whole compound to find him.  Took all of 3 and a 1/2 minutes.

Passed a sign that says “Sniper, Begin Sprint.”  Then another that said “Safe, Walk again.”

The Army has a sense of humor.  lol

Apparently, someone thought that there were snipers along Airport road.  Fuckin ‘ Newbies!  I thought the Army was supposed to be brave and on top of that kind of thing.  Those hills were cleared out back in 2004.  I guess it feels tougher if you can tell yourself that you’re braving sniper fire daily.  lol

Jonathan and I spent the night hanging out and talking over cold sodas, beef jerky and potato chips.  All the while dreaming about having a Jack and Coke and wings.

The Army and General Order #1.  The downfall of good times in a war zone.  Meanwhile, the Italians, Brits and French are drinking heartily over on ISAF HQ and hundreds of ISAF bases around the country.

God Bless America!  Home of the Tali-Baptists and Fundamentalists Extremist Protestants who love to send their kids to war at the ripe old age of 18 and 19 but GOD FORBID they have a @#$%^&*@! beer!

Can you say RE-TAR—–DID!!!! (p.s.  yes, I know that’s mispelled…lol)

Good times anyway…thousands of miles from home in a safe and cozy little war zone with my little Bro.

Gotta love it.

A Gift from Mazr-e Sherif

In Afghanistan, culture on December 12, 2009 at 12:05 am

My good friend and Terp Shoaib visited Mezr-e Sherif last week.  He brought this Chapan (Traditional Coat) and kolah-e Uzbeki (hat) back as a gift.  I look like a dork, but, it’s pretty cool.

Journalist Christina Lamb on Hamid Karzai:

It was very odd to go to Kabul in early December 2001 and see him sitting in the palace, shivering by the single bar electric fire that was the only heat.

I laughed to see him in traditional dress. He explained that his long striped silk coat, or chapan, and astrakhan hat had been given to him to keep warm as he’d been flown in there from the south with no clothes. Later, when Tom Ford described him as the “chicest man on the planet”, he had little choice but to adopt that as his look.

John Calipari on Playing at Kentucky

Calipari said he’s trying to do much more with this team. “It’s about more than just winning,” Calipari said. “It’s about are you getting your team better. are they coming together? That’s what I’m trying to do.”

Calipari also said that he’s seeing a huge difference in his competition. The Wildcats are a big target every night. “We’re everybody’s Super Bowl,” Calipari said. “It’s almost stupid watching tape. They’re not going to play the way they’re playing on that tape.”

Daniel Orton getting high praise:

I tried six ways to Sunday to make the following fit in the John Wall feature I just posted, but it was like putting a taco on a birthday cake so I had to leave it out. Nevertheless I want this to be on the record:

The sequence in Saturday’s North Carolina-Kentucky game where Daniel Orton rejected John Henson at the rim, sprinted down the floor, received a fast-break pass from Eric Bledsoe, and dished an exquisite bounce-pass to Patrick Patterson for the dunk may have been the most impressive possession I have seen from a player this decade. Defense, athleticism, hustle, selflessness, and point-guard-level skill, all on one play. Seven-second wonder Daniel Orton, I salute you!

This is the Hotel at which Unny and I will stay during our visit to Xi’an, China.  It’s a beautiful structure and, more importantly, it’s fairly central to everything we’ll want to see in the City.

I love Shangri~La Hotels.  I’ve stayed in them in Dubai, Bangkok, New Delhi and Kuala Lumpur.  Always a pleasant stay.  The Staff are professional to the utmost and ever willing to assist in every way possible.

And they always smell nice.  lol

The Terracotta Army (simplified Chinese: 兵马俑; traditional Chinese: 兵馬俑; pinyin: bīngmǎ yǒng; literally “soldier and horse funerary statues”) are the Terra Cotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang the First Emperor of China. The terracotta figures were discovered in 1974 by some local farmers near Xi’an, Shaanxi province, China near the Mausouleum of the second Ming Emperor. (Chinese: 秦始皇陵; pinyin: Qín Shǐhuáng Líng). The figures vary in height (183–195 cm – 6ft–6ft 5in), according to their role, the tallest being the generals. The figures include strong warriors, chariots, horses, officials, acrobats, strongmen, and musicians. Current estimates are that in the three pits containing the Terracotta Army there were over 8,000 soldiers, 100 chariots with 400 horses and 300 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried in the pits.[1]

I bought this Statue of Jayavarman VII in Cambodia in December of 2008.  Carried it to Afghanistan and it’s been in my room here in Herat since.  I’m going to leave it in Afghanistan.  Just wanted to leave a piece of Cambodia behind in this country.  The Taliban and the Khmer Rouge similarly wrecked their respective countries and set them back decades in progress and education.  To me, it’s a similar tale.  I’ve pretty much decided to give this statue to MG Akrummuddeen.  Hoping he will keep it in his office.  That would be pretty cool.

These candies were an Eid gift form Wahid.  I’m going to send them home to my Momma.  The tins depict the Minarets of Herat.  I think that ‘s awesome.  These remind me of the candy tins that my Grandmother used to have at her house when I was a kid.

No.5 Kentucky edges No.10 North Carolina

Big Cuz talked a big game but didn’t put up much to show for it.  He’ll have plenty of chances to redeem himself, though.

It was a hell of a game. I looked and the Cats were up by 19.

Half time came and went and suddenly the Cats were no longer taking it to them.  Wall, apparently, had cramps.  #54 held it down, but, no one else stepped up while Blue Jesus was out.

Finally, though, Eric Bledsoe took advantage of opportunity and iced his free throws and Wall came back in time to to help putt he game away.  EB and JW put the final touches on a nice win by hitting 5 of 6 in the final 30 seconds as the Cats held off the Tar Heels.

A nice halt to a 5 game skid that began back in the days of TLT and continued through the lunacy that was Billy Gillispie.

Excellent Game Guys.  Wish I could have watched it.  AFN doesn’t think that College Basketball is very popular overseas, so I’ll have to catch it tomorrow on tape delay.  Better late than never though.

Thanksfully, the guys at Wildcatnation.net kept me up to date throughout the game.  If the game was half as frantic as the chat room, tape delay probably saved me a heart attack.

GO BIG BLUE!

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – John Calipari’s rebuilding project at Kentucky is ahead of schedule.

Patrick Patterson added 19 points and seven rebounds for Kentucky (8-0), which snapped a five-game losing streak to the Tar Heels (7-2) and inched closer to becoming the first program to reach 2,000 victories. The Wildcats have 1,996, while North Carolina has 1,991.

Deon Thompson led North Carolina with 14 points and Will Graves added 13, but the Tar Heels‘ second-half rally stalled in the final minutes.

Wall and fellow freshman Eric Bledsoe made sure of it, making 5 of 6 free throws in the last 30 seconds after North Carolina had trimmed a 19-point deficit to two.

Freshman star John Wall shook off a leg injury to finish with 16 points, including the clinching free throws with 4 seconds remaining, and the fifth-ranked Wildcats held off No. 10 North Carolina 68-66 on Saturday.

‘You guys are going to say I’m crazy, but I’m happy with the way it played out,” said coach John Calipari. ”We let the other team come at us. We gave up way too many (3s) but I’m proud of my guys. We did what we needed to do. We had just enough.”

For a team whose motto is ”envy our past, fear our future,” the first signature win of Calipari’s tenure proved his rebuilding job is well ahead of schedule.

”I hope it just gives people some respect for us that we’re a pretty good team,” Wall said. ”We did what we were supposed to, come out with a win against a great team.”

”You’ve got to give them congratulations, they really kicked our butts,” Williams said. ”They just ran us out of the gym.”

Ladyboys of Thailand

In beauty, culture, Holidays, Thailand, thinking out loud, Unny on December 5, 2009 at 12:05 am

http://deadlinescotland.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/ladyboys01.jpg?w=604

So!  You head on over to Thailand.  You land at Bhumi Airport.  You’re in Bangkok.  Krung thep.  City of Angels.   All there is left to do is jump in a Taxi and head on down to Khaosarn Road or Sukhumvit Road.   Ya check into your hotel room.  Ya take a nap to prepare for the parties that are surely to be roaring up and down KSR and the Suk later that night.

You’ve heard all about the parties and clubs around Bangkok, but, it’s your first time there.

You get up.  Get showered.  Dressed and are out on the town.  Ready to get it on.

You meet the lady of your dreams.

But…something seems a little off.

She’s tall.  You heard that Thai ladies are too short.

She’s got perfect breasts, but, they’re surgically enhanced.  There are other things that hit you as odd, but, you keep blowing it off as paranoia.  You might also notice other Thai gals looking at you occasionally with what seems like a knowing glance and other Western men glancing in y our direction and chuckling or outright pointing and laughing at ya.

You figure you’re just paranoid.  You spend the night drinking and dancing with your new lady friend.  She seems friendly, shy, reserved.  She’s polite.  Doesn’t talk a lot.

As the night goes on, your drinking and feeling your buzz.

Suddenly, you seem to notice that her shoulders seem a bit too wide for a lady.

A hazy memory comes to you.  Something you read in a travel book or in a blog before you flew to Bangkok.

KATOOEY! pops into your head.  LADYBOYS!  The blog said to watch out for Bangkoks many transexuals.

You start to freak out a bit.  You might even lose your cool.

Don’t.   Just calm down and ask her.  If she is, she’ll probably tell you.  If she’s not,  you might get smacked or she might laugh at you and you just broke the ice with a hot, unusually tall Thai chic.

Katooey or Ladyboys are just a part of life in Thailand.  Much of Asia actually.  It’s no big deal to them.  If you make it a big deal, Thais will look at you like you’re a fool.

The way I see it is that they’re just another group of God’s creatures.  I don’t  understand it.  Probably never will.  I don’t need to understand it.  It’s their life.  Not mine.  As long as they’ve been truthful with me and not tried to trick me into anything that is not for me, I’ve got no problem with it.  To each his own.  Some men like it.

I’ve noticed that Brits, Aussies and Japanese tend to be the big group that gets into the transgender dating/sex scene.  If you sit in a bar on the street on Walking Street in Pattaya or Bang La Road in Phuket or off Nana Plaza on Suk Soi 4, it seems that most of the guys talking to the Katooey are from those islands.  I may be off on that assessment, but, I noticed it during my first trip to Thailand back in 2004.  Since then, I’ve paid attention when I see a dude with a Ladyboy.  Almost without fail, they’re from one of the aforementioned island nations.  Don’t know why and it may just be a string of coincidences over a five year period.  Who cares.

I’ve met a few and they seem nice.  Normal.  Outside of the fact that they are women who used to be men.  Chances are, if you’ve been to Bangkok for a while, you’ve met one and didn’t know it.

When I was traveling with my friend Becca, I was pretty good at spotting them.  So we made a game out of it.  If we wer out and about and I saw one, I’d rub the back of my neck as I passed her so that Becca could spot her too.  It was pretty funny.  About half of the time, Becca couldn’t tell.

What’s that tell you about your chances.  lol

Like I said earlier, it’s no big deal.  If it’s not your thing, don’t freak out.  Just tell her and leave gracefully.  If it’s your thing, well, that’s between you and her.

http://www.theforumbarrow.co.uk/images/lady-boys.pngIn Thailand, it’s so normal that they have Miss Thai LadyBoy Beauty Pageants in the larger, mainstream shopping malls.  Everyone gathers around and watches them in their gowns and bikinis and everyone applauds them.  I saw one beauty pageant with a talent show.  One of the girls was belting out Whitney Houston and sounded damn good.  It’s remarkable only for how unremarkable that the ladyboys are for Thais.  It was the same in Cambodia, Malaysia and, though a bit more subdued, it was the same for Vietnam.  I saw them in India as well.

Like I said, if you meet one of these ladies and you’re not comfortable around them, just depart the scene gracefully.  Otherwise, you’ll look like the ass.  No reason for it to ruin your evening or your trip.  After a few days, you’ll be able to spot them and know which ladies to talk to and which ladies to avoid.

Almost everything can be surgically altered.  Hips, voice box, Adam’s apple, derriere, breats, jaw structure.  I mean everything.

Well almost. First things first.

Height.  If they are taller than 5′ 6″, it’s almost certain.

If you want to be certain, check out the feet.  Big feet.  A sure sign.  Never met a Thai lady with big feet.

Last thing that is almost always a dead give away is the shoulders.  If they’re rail skinny and still have wide shoulders, they’re probably a Katooey.

That will probably save  you.

Now.  All that said, they’re still just people.  No reason to be disrespectful to them or treat them badly.  Just as you don’t know them or their interests until you meet them and get to know them, they don’t know you and don’t know if you are interested or not until you tell them that you are or are not.

If you aren’t, no need for a scene.  Some of them are nice folks just like anyone else.  Some of them are scamps just like anyone else.  You’ll find transgender and transvestite all over the social strata of Thailand.  They work at 7Eleven, they work as bartenders, wait persons, Executive, Mall Store Clerks, Government Office personnel.  All over.  That gal whom you cursed out or spat on or belted the night before may be your bartender the next night.  She might be the customs clerk that handles your Visa.  Don’t get yourself in a bind and make a fool of yourself.  It’s just as easy to politely excuse yourself and walk away.  After all, you’re in Thailand to have fun.  You’re not there to cast social judgments.  By demurring gracefully, you might impress that beautiful little Thai girl standing next to you enough that she approaches YOU.  It happens.

And then, who knows…

Best Buy Ad Touting Muslim Holiday Sparks Debate

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

A Best Buy ad with a Muslim theme is raising questions of how retailers should mark religious holidays.

The ad on BestBuy.com wishes Muslims a happy Eid al-Adha, a Muslim holiday that lasts three days and happens to fall on the extended Thanksgiving weekend.

A BestBuy.com message board has been filled with mixed responses since the ad was posted, MyFoxTwinCities.com reports.

One says, “Thank you Best Buy for the Eid Greetings!! I plan to spend more money at BB (Best Buy.) Thank you for being inclusive of various cultures.”

Another post wasn’t as supportive: “Happy Eid Al-Adha but no Merry Christmas? I assume your next advertisements will say Merry Christmas. Otherwise, I will no longer shop at best buy. I will shop at those businesses which support Christmas.”

Best Buy released a statement saying, “We do use the word ‘holiday’ in some of our advertising because it is meant to be inclusive to everyone. However, just as we have in the past, we will also reference specific holidays such as Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa in our weekly ads, store signage and other advertising vehicles.”

I don’t get it.  I don’t understand how marketing firms can think it is non-offensive to generalize Christian Holidays and then specifically market to Muslims on  Islamic holidays.  I don’t have a problem with gearing their marketing towards Muslims and their holidays.  Though, were I Muslim, I’d be offended with the commercial targeting of such a holy occasion.  However, I question the wisdom of surrendering to the PC Police when it comes to Christianity by steering away from the use of terms like “Merry Christmas” and instead using Happy Holidays while specifically targeting Muslim holidays and using Islamic terms in the advertising such as “Eid Mubarak.”  Muslims be careful.  This is the first step towards commercializing your holy days.  The last step is the loss of all meaning except gaining a profit from your religious and semi-religious cohorts.

As the old saying goes, BUYER BEWARE!

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

I believe that God has no true connection to any of the established religions of our age.  Every religioin/church of our age is an offshoot of some system of governance and all have been used for the accumulation and furtherance earthly authority/power.

I believe that God loves all of humanity and accepts all of mankind despite religious belief or affiliation. Furthermore, I believe that if he was as active an interloper in the affairs of man, he would have destroyed all of the current set of religions much as the Bible portrays him as destroying Sodom and Gomorra. All earthly religions are corruptions of the true spirit of God and humanity.  Whether it be the Protestant/Catholic schism of Christianity or the Shi’a/Sunni schism of Islam, all sow discord and divide when they should be uniting energies for all of mankind.

Only when a religion unites mankind through compassion, spirituality and love–faith, hope and love–only then will a religion have the true authority and standing of God.

God is Faith.

God is Hope.

God is Love

For all of humanity. Not one race. Not one belief. Not only for straight people. Not only for Jews or gentiles or Muslims or Hindus or anyone one specific people.

God is for all of humanity.

Enough on Religion and it’s ill effects on humanity.

Reverence of the Sacred and tools of Division

In culture, islam, Quotes, Religion, Spirituality, thinking out loud on December 2, 2009 at 12:01 am

http://decorativeprayerflags.com/flags/F0046_SacredSymbols.jpg

We despise all reverences and all the objects of reverence which are outside the pale of our own list of sacred things. And yet, with strange inconsistency, we are shocked when other people despise and defile the things which are holy to us.

~ Mark Twain

There is a lesson here for all.  Liberals disdain the religious folk of America for their demagoguery against homosexuality and abortion and much of liberal ideology.  The religious right of America turns that same disdain back on the Left because the Left constantly uses the symbols and sacred writings and personages or deities of the religion as items of scorn.

And the cycle of misunderstanding, mis-characterization and violence endlessly and heedlessly continues.  Pulsating with hatred and abuse.  Round and round to no end.

Add the Muslims to the equation and the revolution simply becomes more and more violent and more and more out of touch with the spirit of generosity, charity and brotherhood espoused by each of these theologies of man.  Lost is faith, hope and love.  Replaced by desolation, poverty and apathy.

Humanity takes ideas that should bring all together and uses them as tools of division.

Perhaps, Sam is right and the animals are much more evolved than us.

John Wall sets record with 14 Assists in Crushing UNC-Asheville. UP NEXT: The Tar Heels

In Sports, UK Basketball on December 1, 2009 at 7:53 am

wall_78558

In a 94-57 defeat of UNC-Asheville, John Wall dishes out 14 assists breaking the single game record for assists by a Frosh.  Consider that against the backdrop of UK greats.  Amazing.  This kid is a big time talent.  Not that we didn’t already know that.  DeMarcus Cousins threw down a double double and ended the game with 24 points and 12 boards and going 8 for 10 at the line in a mere 17 minutes of PT.  Darnell Dodson was resurrected from Coach Cal purgatory and blasted UNCA for 15 points.  Of course, Patterson gives his usual-17 pts and 9 boards. These boys are for real. The whole cast and crew. I can’t wait to get home and watch these guys blast a hole in the SEC Tournament.

University of Kentucky basketball players made it through Monday night’s game without stomping on the University of Louisville logo at Freedom Hall.

Instead, the Wildcats walked all over North Carolina Asheville – with an assist from point guard John Wall.

Fourteen of them, in fact.

Sparked by Wall’s slick second-half passing, No. 5 UK stomped on the Bulldogs 94-57 in their final tuneup before Saturday’s game against No. 11 North Carolina.

Wall – who earlier Monday had been named the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week for the second consecutive week – had a career-high 14 assists, five of them on consecutive baskets in the second half.

Wall’s assist total was one shy of Travis Ford’s single-game UK record, set against Eastern Kentucky University on Dec. 8, 1993, and the most ever by a UK freshman in a single game.

Wall added 12 points, including a spectacular one-handed dunk on a baseline drive with 2:13 to play. He was named the Greater Louisville UK Alumni Club’s Player of the Game.

It was Wall’s second double-double of the season. He had 21 points and 11 assists in a win against Rider on Nov. 21.

During an open practice on Sunday, UK’s Patrick Patterson, DeMarcus Cousins and Josh Harrellson had playfully stomped on the Cardinal logo at halfcourt, to the delight of fans in attendance.

There were no such antics from the players on Monday, though UK’s Wildcat mascot followed their lead during halftime.

Instead, the Cats (7-0) entertained fans on Monday with a second-half dunking display against the undersized Bulldogs.

After the game Leach asked Big Cuz about the upcoming contest against North Carolina. Big Cuz responded with:  “Yeah I not impressed…” Hope he can keep that promise.  Carolina is not the juggernaut that they were last season or in their last championship season.  Even so, they’re not and never will be a push over. I have faith that our boys will take them this year in Rupp. Led by Patrick Patterson and John Wall, Kentucky is no pushover this year either. With Big Cuz mixing it up in the paint, Dodson throwing down treys, Bledsoe out there with him and the rest of the crew, I’m confident that Kentucky is going to take another step in the right direction and get one win closer to that 2,000 win mark.

Go Cats!

Wall did his best to provide a little entertainment for what figures to be his only game at Freedom Hall during his collegiate career.

He threw down a wicked reverse dunk on a break and followed it up moments later with another slam after a steal. UNC-Asheville’s J.P. Primm didn’t even bother chasing Wall down the court, trotting once Wall got behind him as the Kentucky star swooped in for the jam.

Swiss Vote Bans Muslim Minarets

GENEVA Over 57 percent of Swiss voters on Sunday approved a blanket ban on the construction of Muslim minarets, according to official results posted by Swiss news agency ATS.

A final tally of 26 cantons indicates that 57.5 percent of the population have voted in favour of the ban on minarets — the turrets or towers attached on mosques from where Muslims are called to prayer.

Only four cantons rejected the proposal brought by Switzerland’s biggest party — the Swiss People’s Party (SVP), which claims that minarets symbolise a “political-religious claim to power.”

Honestly, I think that this should be the policy of the west until Muslim countries change their policies toward Churches and other religions/beliefs within their own countries.

They’ll complain, but, they haven’t a foot to stand on.  Especially the most vocal of the complainants such as Saudi Arabia.  The unholy House of Sa’ud rails against intolerance of Islam in other countries, yet, they are intolerant of any other religion or belief within Saudi Arabia–even forcing non-Muslim women to wear the hijab–and are the primary exporters of Wahhabism and Islamic Fundamentalism throughout the globe.

All religions are bi-polar.  At once espousing peace and war, intolerance and inclusiveness.  Islam is no worse a religion than any other in my opinion.  It’s leadership, though, leaves much to be desired.

The U.N. Human Rights Committee called the posters discriminatory and said Switzerland would violate international law if it bans minarets.

If this is the case, then why is Saudi Arabia not in violation of International law.  There are several Muslim countries with these restrictions against building religious structures.  Seems a bit of a double standard to me.  The UN should clean up the primary violators of international law before they go looking for villains in a country like Switzerland.

If a backlash against Islam is in the offing, much of the blame can and should be placed squarely on the shoulders of leadership of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Palestine and Syria.
